3G Airport Express?

| July 15th, 2008

Just a thought, but what if you could plug in your 3G USB dongle (Mine’s a Vodafone Pebble thingy) into an Apple Airport Express? Would be very useful indeed. Maybe you can do it already?! (Surely it’s all in the software, though I’m sure there is a really obvious reason why it couldn’t happen)

That also got me thinking about lots of other things that could, should and will happen. As hardware gets more and more connected and connectable, things like X10 get more mainstream and Maplin keeps on having sales - then who knows what we’re going to come up with. And I’m not just talking about brands/companies. I mean us, the geeks, the ones tinkering with things and doing all that stuff that voids warranties, infringes copyright and breaks new boundaries.

You can definitely do that with other routers… not sure how hackable the apple stuff is though.

Hi Jonathan, Neat post. Totally agree. There’s loads of hacks out there on the web, you just have to hunt them down. Wherever there’s a port, there’s a hack. Whenever I post a hack that I’ve played with on my blog it is inevitably far more popular than the usual PR drivel. And yes, the Maplin sale is a great driver for innovation. All the best, Stephen

Cool. Thought you would be able to! Is there an equivalent ultra mobile router I wonder? I have two AE’s running with Airfoil to get my stuff round the house and I’m pretty much Apple’d up. It was more of a thought as I own both pieces of hardware . . . . Cheers Jof

I’m looking for the same hack. I hope someone is already working hard to solve it.

Miklos - since I wrote this post I found out just how easy it is to share a 3G connection using your Mac - just go into ‘Sharing” and create a local wi-fi network. That’s useful to me in some cases - but still, I’d like the above to become reality, or just built straight into my MacBook Pro.
